Though he lacked major chart hits and never achieved blockbuster album sales, John David J.D. Souther was one of the key figures of the 1970s Los Angeles country-rock movement. He was part of the duo Longbranch Pennywhistle with future Eagle Glenn Frye, and later a member of the Souther-Hillman-Furay Band, a supergroup put together by David Geffen. Souther's songs had a mellow country twang and classic pop sensibility that made him a go-to songwriter for the likes of Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, and the Eagles themselves. Though Souther had more of an impact as a behind-the-scenes player, he has continued to release acclaimed solo albums into the 21st century. ~ Rovi Staff
