Sharing a religious and cultural heritage with Persia, Pakistani carpets share the same weaving techniques and styles as their counterparts in Iran. The surrounding countries have had a tremendous impact on Pakistan and the result is a blending of Persian, Caucasian and Turkish designs. In contemporary Pakistan, carpet weaving has remained mainly a cottage industry with the great majority of pieces manufactured in individual dwellings, which may contain several looms. Today, rugs are woven with high-quality blends of indigenous and imported wool. Approximately 70% of the weaving is done within a 400-mile radius of Lahore, the capital of Punjab province.
